Be like you

You’re the queen of this crazy town
you’re on a first-name basis now
you wanted flowers and shiny things
the life of your wildest dreams
but all you got were
obsessions disguised as love
nobody you can really trust
you didn’t think it would be like this
when you made your wish
on that shooting star

Everything you touch
turns into gold
you never grew up
but somehow you got old
You made a promise
to a little girl
that you’d give it your all
but you didn’t know

The price you pay to matter
make it to the top of the ladder
the friends you lose for the path you choose
until everybody wants to be like you

If you’re not perfect they’ll spit you out
so be tasteless in their mouth
If you don’t fight for what’s right
you can never be wrong
you can be everything to everyone

Signed away your voice
for the promise of love
all you got was applause
but never enough
If you knew the cost of being a star
the blood and tears on your guitar
that you don’t play anymore
would it still be worth

The price you pay to matter
make it to the top of the ladder
the integrity you lose for the path you choose
until everybody wants to be like you

Feet aching from the heels you wear
walking down the road
dodging lions on the hunt for you
wherever you go
and your body’s gotta look nineteen
or no one’s going to look at you like
a trophy
and you won’t be
relevant
anymore

The life you lose for the one you choose
where everybody wants to be like you
